As students graduate from high school and move onto college and the working world, understanding employment law becomes pertinent. The employment law section delves into discrimination and whistle-blowing, both timely issues in today’s society.
Concepts the students will learn about employment law include:
- How employment law came into being through three main statutes: Title VII (prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion or sex), Age Discrimination in Employment Act (“ADEA”- protecting workers over the age of 40), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”- protecting individuals with physical and mental disabilities);
- What defenses are available to employers who are faced with employment discrimination claims;
- How the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”) operates to protect employees;
- What types of claims are available to employees who are being harassed at work; and
- How the law works to protect privacy, workers’ compensation, wages, hours and benefits.
