Personal Injury Law

Students learn that tort law is the area of civil law that governs actions for damages brought by injured individuals. An overview of various aspects of tort law is presented in the unit before it focuses on the most common tort action: negligence.

The chapter’s discussion on tort law and negligence highlights particular issues:

  • How the elements of tort law apply to car accidents, medical negligence, and premises liability;
  • How the particular value of an accident depends on the parties involved;
  • How the concepts of money damages and insurance coverage influence public policy and why these are controversial and relevant current subjects; and
  • How the legal principles of tort law are portrayed by Hollywood and what students can learn to distinguish the real law from Hollywood’s version.
