News Stories & Activities    Activity 1:  Alternative Solutions to Music Piracy

Is attacking consumers with lawsuits and other methods of defense the right way to stop music piracy?  Some think so, but others, like Sony are trying different, more amicable solutions to increase sales.

  • What other solutions can you think of that might be better for both the consumer and the recording industry?

Will attacking consumers, in your opinion, make more people willing to buy CD's from the same record label that is suing them?

  • Is the recording industry making enough money off these lawsuits to recover the losses from downloaded music?
  • Or does it matter how much money they are getting because they just want to get their point across?

In your opinion, why do you think people would rather download music than go to a store and buy it?  Is the price of a CD getting too high?

Activity 2: Patent Infringement in the Toy and Game Industry:
Research 2 games or toys that are similar (i.e. 2 types of modeling dough).

  • Who manufactures each?
  • Are both products patented (additional research on the dates of the patents can also be done)?
  • What are the similarities/differences between these 2 products?
  • Why can these 2 products co-exist without infringing on patents?
