Section V: Copyright Ownership

Once a copyright exists, what rights or benefits does Lacey D get? What responsibility or burden does the copyright impose on the rest of us?

When someone gets a right, someone else always gets a corresponding responsibility.

Because Lacey D owns the copyright to Encountering the Edge, she alone has the right to 1) reproduce the work, 2) adapt the copyright work, 3) distribute, or sell, copies of the work, 4) perform the work in public, 5) display the work in public (not applicable in the case of a sound recording but it does apply to a photograph or painting). These are all separate rights and as such, Lacey D can sell one, two, or all of them to others.

These rights can prove to be very valuable. Only Lacey D can reproduce or copy her CD and only she can sell it, which means no one can get the CD unless they pay her for it. She is entitled to collect all the proceeds from selling the CD. Of course, she must pay for the expenses of making the CD, including paying the recording studio and the manufacturer that produced the CDs and paying the record stores for all the costs involved in selling the CD (i.e. the cost of renting the building, the cost of paying the sales clerks, the cost of the cash registers, etc.). But, after those costs are paid, the rest of the money can go directly into her bank account!
