Chapter Project & Discussion

The Journey Intellectual Property TakesIn this project, a personal piece of intellectual property will be created. Examples are a song, poem, short story, drawing, etc. complete with title, lyrics, etc. By conducting research on the Internet and contacting the US Patent, Trademark and Copyright Office, the process of how the specified piece of intellectual property can be protected and the steps needed to take as owner to obtain that protection will be discovered.  Journals will be used to document research.

If presentations are done in class
:
The project will culminate in a class presentation of each student's piece of intellectual property along with an account of the process involved to have this creation protected. Creativity in the creation of the piece of intellectual property as well as in the presentation will be accounted for.

Discussion: Discuss property rights and responsibilities:
  • How would you feel, as the inventor/owner, if someone violated your property rights (i.e. tried to steal the title, content, image; tried to make a profit off your IP without permission)?
  • What kind of recourse would you seek (if any)?
  • Go back into the vignette at the beginning of the chapter: how do Lacey’s and Devin's dilemmas relate to your experience with IP while doing the chapter project?
